For the third time this month, someone has posted this obscenely racist painting, by a painter who made his career out of creating stereotyped, “exotic,” images to be devoured by a willing Western audience.
Dear art enthusiasts of Tumblr: if you don’t see what is wrong with this painting, and many of the other works by this artist, please read “Orientalism” by Edward Said. It’s really the least you can do, considering you are apparently gaining so much pleasure from viewing these works at the expense of exploited people.
